Mumbai News, Asia's oldest newspaper, continues to publish as usual despite two world wars, anti-colonial resistance, the global economic crisis and the Corona epidemic.

   It has been 200 years since Mumbai Samachar started publishing. Even when many newspapers around the world were shut down during the Corona-related situation, Mumbai News covered the situation on a daily basis.

   The Gujarati-language newspaper was started on July 1, 1822, from a British-era building in Mumbai, according to AFP.

   Initially, Mumbai Samachar was a weekly newspaper aimed at informing the business community in the coastal city of Mumbai.

   Mumbai News means 'Mumbai News' in Hindi.

   In its early days, Mumbai News reported on departure times, property information, government appointments, opium prices and other British-controlled locations.

   The newspaper's editor, Nilesh Dave, told AFP that Mumbai News was started for traders and even today the newspaper is read first by traders.

   We call it the Merchant's Newspaper. Mumbai News has been the focus of attention of India's independence movement leaders, Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, whose letters to the editor are still preserved in the newspaper's archives.


   Over time, the Mumbai News began to appear daily. Informing the readers in 12 Gujarati speaking states, news of politics, business and other fields also started appearing in it.

   The newspaper claims that 1.5 million copies are published daily and Mumbai Samachar still exists today because of its extremely loyal readers.

   According to the newspaper's editor, Nilesh Dave, most readers have been associated with the newspaper since childhood.


   "It is said in Gujarati that if it was published in Mumbai News, it would be true. Readers have so much confidence in us ..."

   He said that the management of the newspaper had organized book fairs in Gujarati and other mother tongues, had given theatrical performances and had organized essay competitions to attract the attention of new readers and increase the circulation of the newspaper. ۔

   During Corona, the management increased the price of the newspaper from Rs. 7 to 7 rupees. 10, which is the highest in other newspapers.


   Mumbai News has not set a retirement age for its 200 employees and many senior citizens also work here.

   According to the editor, an official is 87 years old and still writes for the newspaper. He started working for Mumbai News at the age of 18.

   Editor Nilesh Dave has claimed that he is now making a profit from Mumbai News, but declined to give details.


   "We will definitely survive. My newspaper will complete the next 500 years."
