Gilgit-Baltistan government immediately banned tourists from entering the area.
A notification issued by Astor Diamer Division Commissioner Dildar Ahmad Malik said that hundreds of tourists were stranded on the roads for hours due to landslides on Babu Sir Top and Karakoram Highways.
The notification further said that to protect the people, the government has decided to ban the entry of tourists till the end of the monsoon rains.
According to the notification, officers at Babu Sar and Thor check posts have been directed not to allow anyone to enter, violators will be punished.
A large number of people go to the northern regions to spend their summer holidays in the mountains, but the monsoon rains have made the situation difficult for locals and tourists in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The chairperson of the National Disaster Management Authority told SAMAA on Sunday that 60 to 70 per cent additional rainfall is expected in the area this year.
